Collection: Andeana Hats
Andeana Hats is a women-owned, sustainable hat brand co-founded by Laura Grier and Pats Krysiak that works directly with indigenous artisans in Peru and Guatemala
. The hats are handmade using techniques passed down for generations and are made from alpaca wool or handwoven palm leaves. Each hat comes with a removable "intention band" with a unique meaning, based on traditional Quechua symbols.
Brand mission
The brand focuses on social and environmental impact, with a core mission of preserving vanishing indigenous crafts, empowering women, and supporting ethical fashion.
- Empowering artisans: The company provides sustainable income opportunities for the artisans, often in remote communities, which enables women to work from home at their own pace without disrupting family life.
- Preserving culture: By creating a global marketplace for these goods, Andeana helps keep alive ancient weaving and hat-making traditions that would otherwise disappear. The Quechua language is primarily oral, and the weaving designs are a key part of their cultural history.
- Conscious consumerism: Andeana promotes regenerative fashion and conscious shopping, offering a product that is not only stylish but also has a meaningful backstory.
- Partnering with non-profits: Andeana collaborates with organizations like Awamaki, a fair trade non-profit, to support women artisans through training and market access.
Product features
- Handmade craftsmanship: The hats are meticulously handmade by skilled Quechua artisans in Peru and K'iche' artisans in Guatemala.
- Intention bands: Each hat is sold with a removable, woven band that features a traditional Quechua design. These bands have different symbolic meanings, such as "Gratitude" or "Protection," allowing the wearer to choose a personal intention.
- Materials: The hats are available in natural, sustainably-sourced materials like alpaca wool and palm leaf straw.
- Variety of styles: Andeana offers various hat styles, including Spanish-style (bolero), Western, and floppy hats.
Founders' inspiration
The idea for Andeana Hats was born during a trek through the Rainbow Mountains and Sacred Valley in Peru. Co-founders Laura Grier and Pats Krysiak were inspired by the unique hats and weavings of the Andean women they met. They sought to combine these traditional styles with a modern aesthetic to create a brand that would help share the culture and support the artisans.
